What is open communication & why should I care?

Ever said something you regret? Open communication enables you to convey what you’re feeling and thinking while building empathy for the other person. It’s judgment-free, blame-free, and regret-free.

While it may sound woo-woo, the way we speak can be the difference between shutting someone out and helping them get closer to you.

How do I do it?

Steps to open communication:

  1. Assume there’s truth to what another person is saying. Acknowledge it.

  2. Empathize with them. What must they be feeling or thinking?

  3. Ask more about what they’re feeling/thinking.

  4. Tell them how you feel (“I feel you’re crazy” is not a feeling…).
